More prominent to text block edges and free endpapers, as well as title pages. Hinges are moderately cracked causing boards to be loose. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild rubbing, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Edinburgh and London: Gall & Inglis / Houlston & Wright, 1869. Hardcover. Good. 12mo. 490 pages. A small book measuring 6 5/8 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in full brown leather with elaborate designs on the binding embossed in gilt and in blind. All edges gilt. The binding is rubbed and bumped. The hinges are especially rubbed but are holding. The two front flyleaves and the frontis are detached but present. Early owner's gift inscription for "1st English Prize" is on the second front flyleaf and is dated 1869. No copyright date in the book itself. Collates complete with 8 engravings, including an engraved frontis, engraved title page, and six other full-page engravings. Contains a FORE EDGE PAINTING showing an old English village scene with a monument on a hill on the left adn the roofs of a crowded village or town below on the right. Rolling countryside can be seen beyond the rooftops of the town on the right, and a road with people leading up to the monument is seen on the left. The painting is a bit dulled and certainly looks old.
