Orpington; London : George Allen, 1893. Leather. Very Good. 11" by 8.5". John Ruskin. A limited large paper edition of this influential work on architecture by John Ruskin. First thus. The limited Large Paper Edition. In the publisher's original half vellum binding with gilt detail. With a colour frontispiece, fourteen photogravures, and fourteen illustrations by the Author. Collated complete. An influential work on European architecture, in two parts. The first part looks at cottages in England, France, Switzerland and Westmoreland, with a chapter on chimneys. The second part discusses villas, including mountain villas, British villas, Italian villas and more. John Ruskin was an art critic and writer in Victorian England, being an influential figure in the art world, especially with the Pre-Raphaelites. He was also greatly admired by Leo Tolstoy, Marcel Proust, and William Morris. During his life, he published numerous writings on a variety of topics, including geology, architecture, myths, botany and politics. The half title page is present. In the original half vellum binding. Externally, very smart with some light rubbing to the edges. Spine is darkened. Marks to the vellum, with the odd light mark to the cloth boards. Offsetting to the free endpapers, with light offsetting to the paste-downs. Internally, binding slightly strained but generally firmly bound. Small mark to the tissue guard of the plate facing page 44. Pages bright and clean with the odd handling mark. Light offsetting to page 213. Very Good
