About This Item

London: Chatto and Windus, 1878. First Edition Thus . Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Faux leather. Red pebbled cloth. Five raised bands to spine with gilt titling and decoration. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Bound without publisher's catalogue. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Binding is worn, particularly to corners, joints and spine tips, but still attractive. Front hinge cracked between front blanks but both sets of endpapers are still intact and this is a solidly bound copy. Foxing to front blanks, half-title page, last page of Notes, and rear blanks. Contents clean from title page onwards, without bookplates, inscriptions or foxing, and with light marking to just a few pages. 'Poetry for Children' is a series of rhymed fables, stories, and moral precepts written for children by siblings Charles and Mary Lamb. The first edition of two small volumes published in 1809 is exceedingly rare and the work was not printed again until 1872. This 1878 edition is the first to include 'Prince Dorus' - the last of the Lambs' works for children, and some short poems by Charles Lamb that had previously been unpublished. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured.
