About This Item
London : Lovell Reeve, 1855 A very good copy of the 2nd edition of this important work, updated from the first to add new species and locations. In the original decorative cloth binding with 22 hand coloured plates. It was commissioned for Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series, and was extremely popular, contributing to the Victorian craze for fern books in the mid 1800's. The binding is bright and clean with gilt decoration to the front board and spine. There is some pulling to the spine ends and rubbing to edges, corners and spine joints. The top edge of the back board has a couple of small indentations and there is a small paler area on the board. The original endpapers are present. The contents are complete with tissue guarded frontispiece and 21 further plates - placed to support the text rather than being in numerical order. Text and plates are clean with some toning to the top page edge. The tissue guard has some creasing and there is light creasing to the bottom corners of pp 30-34
