London : Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, 1859 A fair copy of the 3rd (revised) edition of this important work. With the bookplate of Robert Washington Oates on the front pastedown. With 22 coloured plates as called for. With publisher's catalogue bound at the rear. Part of Lovell Reeve's Popular History series, this book was extremely popular and contributed to the Victorian craze for fern books in the mid 1800's. It went through several editions. The book was revised for the third edition - redrawing the plates. This book is in the original red decorative cloth binding with gilt decoration to the front board and spine. The cloth is worn on the hinges and has split at the joint with the back board although the binding remains sound. There is a little marking to boards and spine and the spine is slightly faded. Internally the original endpapers are present and the contents are clean but with the occasional spot or mark.
