About This Item

London: John and Paul Knapton, 1743. 15 3/4 inches by 10 inches. Engraved portrait of 17th century British playwright and poet Ben Jonson. Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) was the most important 18th Dutch engraver of portraits. His magnum opus was Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, a collaboration with historian Thomas Birch and artist George Vertue. Work on the project began circa 1738 and continued until publication in parts between 1743 and 1752. Paper sizes varied among various issues, but all were printed from the original plates. This print is in very good+ condition: clean and bright, with minor smudging limited to margins near edge of paper. There is very minor toning and no foxing.. Early Printing. Single Sheet. Very Good+. Illus. by George Vertue. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Fine Art Print.
