[N.p., 1959. 10 x 13 inches, framed to 14 x 18 inches. Framed. Photograph faded, signature fine and bold. 10 x 13 inches, framed to 14 x 18 inches. The young Lewis L. Strauss (1896-1974) was Herbert Hoover's assistant for two years, 1917 to 1919, while Hoover ran the American Relief Administration assisting Europe after the world war. Strauss was offered the post of controller of the newly formed League of Nations, but turned down the offer on Hoover's advice, and embarked on a successful and distinguished career in business and in the U.S. Navy, where he rose to the rank of Admiral. In 1946, Strauss became an inaugural member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and served as its chairman from 1953 to 1958. A touching testimonial of the long association between the two men.
