About This Item

New York: Carl Van Vechten, 1955. Unbound. Fine. Gelatin silver photograph. Measuring approximately 7" x 10". Fine. Photographer's embossed name, as well as with his stamp on the verso. Captioned by Van Vechten on the verso: "Mattiwilda Dobbs. January 26, 1955" with the number of the negative, "IX mm 5." A lovely portrait of Dobbs, with one hand reaching across her body and resting on her shoulder. Dobbs was a gifted soprano, the first black singer to perform at La Scala in Italy, and the first black woman to receive a long-term performance contract at the Metropolitan Opera.
