Portrait frontispiece engraving of the author after Rowse's crayon sketch, with tissue guard. Small nick and some fraying at the crown of the spine, faint old spot and tide mark at top edge near the gutter (faintly beginning at p. 207, then to end); still, a very good, bright, tight copy. First edition of Thoreau's third book, published posthumously and equipped with a preliminary 33 page biographical sketch by Ralph Waldo Emerson. BAL records the edition consisted of 1558 copies. BORST A3.1.a. BAL 5236 and 20111.

New York: Printed by C.S. Van Winkle, 1819 - 1820.. Seven parts bound in two volumes. Large octavo. 19th century calf, spines gilt extra. Bound without wrappers and adverts. Early manuscript index on front binder's blank in both volumes. Spines darkened and slightly crazed, joints a bit worn and slightly cracked in places (but sound), occasional spotting and foxing to Part I, brown spot in fore-edge of Part VII, clean 5 cm tear in top edge of leaf 63/4 of Part VII, with no loss, still a good set in contemporary dress. Old morocco faced slipcase. First editions, first printings, of each part of Irving's second major sequence publication, with BAL's state 'A' of the text on page 240. Neither the terminal blank for Part I, nor the slip against piracy that was inserted in some copies of Part II are present. Bound in brown linen cloth, backstirp missing, wear at the tips and along edges, fading to the cloth, name/date on title page, foxing on endpapers, mild toning along edges. Internally very good, paper bright, binding tight, all plates present. . 1st. Hard. Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo.

Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend complete in four volumes. Part of Hurd & Houghton's "Works of Charles Dickens. Household Edition." One B&W illustration in each volume with tipped-in protective tissue. Black cloth (faded) with gilt lettering and publisher medallion on spine; gilt medallion on front.FON on FFEP of each volume.Covers are faded, stained, and bumped, with wear on corners and the tops & heels of spines. Volume 4 has a tear up the spine hinge and across the spine. Endpapers are discolored. Pages are age tanned and foxed. Volume 1 & 2 are cracked at half-title page.

First American edition; presumed first printing. Stated "Authorized edition". The book is in excellent condition for its age. Linen-like cover over hard boards has shelf wear at top and bottom of spine and lighter wear at corners. Some marks and a signature inked at top of first fly-leaf page and at top of the first title page. Binding except for some loosening at the lower section of the inside back cover, and text is clear. Pages are in excellent condition. We could not find any tears, marks or foxing. Five pages comprising a list of other books for sale follows the story text.
