London: Faber and Faber Limited, 1940. Pp. xxvii, 293. Profusely illustrated with 77 half-tone illustrations on 24 two-sided plates, and over 80 text illustrations. Wheat coloured cloth with red lettering and illustration to upper cover and spine. Very good plus, clean, tight copy, housed in a slightly soiled, price-intact dust jacket, with minor rubbing to the joints and tips, nicks to the spine ends and tips. Overall, a very good plus dust jacket without the usual fading of the terra cotta spine. Rare to find a first edition in this condition with a dust jacket. This now famous book was " ... the first treatise by a potter on the workshop traditions which have been handed down by Koreans and Japanese from the greatest period of Chinese ceramics in the Sung dynasty. ... and deals with four types of pottery, Japanese raku, English slipware, stoneware, and oriental porcelain. ... The student of pottery learns how to adapt recipes for pigments and glazes, and designs of kilns, to local conditions. ... This is a book that is primarily for the hand-craftsman and the school, with a strong interest for all lovers of pots and for those interested in the cultural relationship between East and West." - dj flap..
