Poussin: Works on Paper: Drawings from the Collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

by Clayton, Martin

Condition: New/New

New York: Thames & Hudson, 1995. 1st . Hardcover. New/New.

Nicolas Poussin was the most important French artist of the seventeenth century, and his work became the embodiment of French classicism. Although best known for his paintings, Poussin's use of pen and luminous wash, and his strong sense of pattern, resulted in some of the most exciting and beautiful drawings of the High Baroque. This book is a catalogue of the drawings by Poussin and his circle in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle -- one of the world's most important holdings of drawings by Poussin, with a provenance that goes back to the collections of the artist's friends and patrons. It accompanied a traveling exhibition of sixty-five Poussin drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, as part of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of Poussin's birth. With 190 illustrations, 108 in color.
