Springfield: State Journal Steam Press, 1866. Hardcover. Small 4to. Modern green buckram. xvi, 504pp, iii. Frontispiece, Fine/very good. Modern binding is superb, clean and handsome; text block is clean and only ever-so-slightly age toned, with bit of soiling to preliminary leaves; there is the occasional spot of foxing, but the majority of the text block is as bright as the day it was published. A tight and unusually attractive first edition of this early study, the first of eight volumes published under Worthen's direction, with assistance from J.D. Whitney, Leo Lesquereux and Henry Engelmann. All called for foldout maps and plans (some partly colored) are present and mainly in superb condition, with only the two largest of them showing some edgewear and bearing expert archival strengthening. Worthen was a renowned if self-taught leading geographer of his day, and served as State Geologist from 1858 to 1875. All in all an exceptional, far above average copy.

Binding typically slightly soiled, else internally fine. A tight and attractive first edition. Limited to 160 copies. Wilkins studies the many genealogical tables used by Boccaccio in both manuscript and early printed versions of his "Genealogia deorum gentilium," a mythological encyclopedia. All captioned tissue guards present and pristine. A superb copy, with the original Caxton Club prospectus laid in.

Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Author Jessie Fenton tells the fictionalized story of Lonny, a teenage boy gone bad, from his petty thievery in his hometown to his hopping a freight train and befriending a man who teaches him to pass bogus check and steal cars within hours of their meeting. Lonny ends up in reform school, becomes a hardened criminal and kills a man during a bank robbery. He dies in the electric chair at Sing Sing. We find the book has some of that classic film noir vibe. Dusty top, light wear or soil to cover and spine; some fingermarks on cover. Fully illustrated with 50 full page, and 135 smaller engravings by Edmund H. New. Fine bright copy in a beautiful binding of half dark green morocco. Spine with five raised bands, compartments with double gilt ruled borders. Two sections lettered in gilt and the others decorated with gilt design of a bird on a branch. Marbled paper on boards. A lovely copy.

James Anthony Froude FRSE (23 April 1818 – 20 October 1894) was an English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine.
