About This Item

Nice condition, antique copy of "A Practical Treatise on the Culture and Management of THE VINE, Under Glass and in the Open Air" by the editors of "The Floricultural Cabinet." Circa 1850's (there is no date of publication stated, but the Preface is dated March 20th, 1858); Simpkin, Marshall, and Co.; London. Presumed 1st edition in this format - the Preface mentions that the "substance for this little work" had appeared "some years back" in "Harrison on Fruit Trees," though there is no mention of a prior stand-alone book edition. The book is nicely illustrated with four full-page plates (three of which are in color), and in-text drawings. There is a 10-page advertisement section at the back (many of the ads are illustrated). Smaller in size - the book measures 7 1/2" tall x 5" wide. Here are some examples of the contents: Introduction and History of the Vine; Formation of an Outside Border; Propagating Vines; Pruning and Training; Vines in Pots; Treatment against an Open Wall; Thinning Bunches; The Red Spider; The Mildew; The Wasp; Vines for the Vinery or Greenhouse; Grizzly Frontiguac; Black Lombardy...and more - please see the photos for the complete list.

Condition:
Clean covers and spine. Bright gilt lettering on the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the text pages are clean with no notable issues found. A few of the tissue guards over the plates have just a bit of light foxing. Old medieval-themed bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. The tissue guard over the color plate preceding chapter II is present, but detached. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
