About This Item

New York: Zone Books, 2004. First English Language Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Fine/Very Good. 8vo. [6], 7-169. Illustrated with reproductions of Chinese art and calligraphic scrolls. With a glossary of Chinese expressions, and notes on major Chinese figures cited in the text. Bound in full black cloth with gilt lettering stamped on spine. A fresh copy in the dust jacket that shows light soiling to front panel along with a half-inch closed tear at the top edge. The distinctly Chinese concept of "bland" can be traced to the union of Daoism, Confucianism and Buddhism, presenting a watered-down harmony that offers "an infinite opening onto the breadth of human expression and taste" (from jacket blurb). Scarce hardcover copy of the first English translation, presented here with a dust jacket now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
