THE PRAISE OF FOLLY. by ERASMUS, DESIDERIUS and Kennet , W(hite) - Transl - 1740: MADE ENGLISH FROM THE LATIN OF ERASMUS

London.: 7 Booksellers, 1740. Rebacked spine and corners in old leather, new embossed title on spine. All pages uniformly browned. Should have 2 frontis portraits (Erasmus and More) but the portrait of Erasmus is missing, that of More is chipped on margin 20x12mm. Prelims to xiv are missing, then follow pp iii-vi . ( My guess - apparently a mis-collation). These last pages contain many ink corrections in a very old hand looking like proof corrections. (The date in ink - 1819- on title p is over the print date of 1740, which is subtracted to give " 79 years ago" : The significance of the dates is a mystery). 184pp, Illustrations which are partially MISSING are Figs 2, 33 and 46 and another on p69 (?). Some pages are frittered, lightly rubbed to extremities, browned internally, but fairly clean. Kennet, White (1660-1728), historian and Bishop of Peterborough translated several Latin works into English, most notably Erasmus' Moriae Encomium, which was published as Wit Against Wisdom (of which this book is the 6th Edition). D E was born 1466, died 1536. Sixth edition, Full-Calf. Good/No dustwrap as issued.. Illus. by Holbeine, Hans. 161x25p6mm. Very Rare and therefore Collectable but defective.
