About This Item
London : J M Dent and Company, 1893 A nice early illustrated copy of Pride and Prejudice, complete in 2 volumes, with black and white frontispieces, decorative title pages, and 2 further black and white plates per volume by William Cooke. Part of 'The Novels of Jane Austen' series - a set of 10 volumes published by Dent and edited by Reginald Brimley Johnson. First published in 1892, it proved popular and this is the 3rd edition of February 1893. The light green cloth bindings have bright gilt titles and decoration to the front board, and more faded gilt titles to the spine. Spine ends lightly pulled on both volumes. Vol I has a tiny dark spot on the spine and some slightly darker areas on the boards. Vol II has a small bump at the top front corner. Corners with very light rubbing. The top page edges are gilted - the remainder are untrimmed. Internally, the decorative 'ex libris' pictures to the front pastedowns are not filled out and there is a bookplate of Castlecraig Library at the top. The free endpapers have some marking. The tissue guards to the frontispieces have been removed but the contents are otherwise complete and are very clean. There is some occasional spotting to the side and top page edges and a couple of pages have been roughly opened in Vol I where the side of p 17/18 is attached to p 19/20. No text affected. Vol II has mark at the side edge of p 206 - mirrored on 207 and a mark in the gutter of pp 208/9 where a piece of paper was stored.
Synopsis
Pride and Prejudice is the second novel by English author Jane Austen, after Sense and Sensibility. First published on 28 January 1813, Austen sold the copyright for just £110. Its manuscript was initially written between 1796 and 1797 in Steventon, Hampshire, where Austen lived in the rectory. Originally called First Impressions, it was never published under that title, and in following revisions it was retitled Pride and Prejudice. It was first published anonymously. A novel of manners, set in the early 19th century, the story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, the second of five daughters of a country gentleman. The five unmarried sisters are pressed to find a good wealthy match, and the very opinionated Elizabeth comes to odds with her proud beau Mr. Darcy.

Reviews
this is my #1 favorite book of all the Jane Austen books. i love the way elizabeth and darcy talk to each other.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is listed by many as a universal Classic and, rightfully, frequents many “Must Read” lists.
Elizabeth Bennett lives in a small country estate. Daughter to a poor country gentleman who has four other daughters, her prospects of marriage are slim. That doesn’t bother Elizabeth, however. She is beautiful, smart, opinionated, strong-willed and in no hurry to find a husband. Her mother, who frequently embarrasses her and her older sister Jane by pushing them at any eligible bachelor, has other plans for her. While at a public ball, she is introduced to mild-mannered pleasant Mr. Bingley who is taken by Jane instantly. Also in attendance is Mr. Bingley’s best friend Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy is handsome and rich but gives the impression of distaste when introduced to Elizabeth. Throughout the story, they constantly misunderstand and miss-judge each other making many nearly grievous mistakes.
If you are anything like me, you will be just as frustrated with Elizabeth as she learns Mr. Darcy’s true character and how to let go of her objections to love and simply fall.
This is truly my all-time favorite book so far. I read it at least once a year, usually around Christmastime. Given that Austen’s writing describes this time-period so intricately, I can picture myself as Elizabeth Bennett every time I read it. And, just like Elizabeth Bennett, I fall in love with Mr. Darcy every time as well.
