About This Item
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: David McKay, Publisher, 1920. First Thus . Hardcover. VG-/G+/No Jacket. Smith, Jessie Willcox. One of a lovely series of classic books for young readers illustrated by famous artists of the day, here, Jessie Willcox Smith, who contributed the title page, decorative endpapers, front pastedown, & 8 full-color, full-page interior plates, all in near pristine condition, with vivid colors & bright white margins, some with a hint of tanning to fore edge. A FIRST in this format with these illustrations from 1920 (First, thus), in 203 pages. With soft green cloth over boards, lettered in dark blue to front & spine, with a colorful front paper pastedown by Smith (which shows slight rubbing, a few spots & edgewear). Hardcover small 4to (7" x 9.25") is in VG-/Good+ condition: very clean with the occasional spot or smudge inside. Former owner's name, gift inscription, & another owner's address label to front endpapers; else completely unmarked. The stitched text block secure & both hinges are intact. Externally, this is rubbing to extremities, heaviest along spine & all corners, with some cloth loss & fraying. Both front & rear boards show stains: a red paint swipe to lower edge of front, white spotting to rear. but front hinge cracked & repaired with clear tape by a previous owner. Pages moderately tanned, but completely supple. No DJ. A lovely edition for the plates alone! Our photos depict the exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping if ordered by 2 pm weekdays (Pacific); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next day.
