St. Louis: G. I. Jones and Company, 1880. First Edition. HB. Blue cloth, gilt lettering on front cover and spine, decorative gilt stamped front cover, 12mo, vii, 271 pp. Frontis portrait of the author and three full page plates in text. Signed and inscribed by the author "To N. W. Taylor Esq. with the compliments of the author. Geo. W. Bailey, St. L Feb. 1893." Bailey, of the 6th Missouri infantry, was a First Lieut. and ADC in the 2nd Division, 15th Army Corp. He was captured by Confederates near Atlanta. This is an account of his escape and return to Union lines. Dedicated to Mrs. Carrie E. Hambrick, a southern woman who assisted in his escape. Important description of the rural south during the Civil War. Very minor foxing, otherwise a clean copy, binding tight. Covers show minor edge wear, some fraying top of spine. Book condition VG.
