About This Item
Attempt to Assassinate Bolivar
Small 4to; 3ll. 51pp; marbled paper wraps.
A collection of documents relating to the trial of Francisco de Paula Santander who was accused of participating in the Conspiracy of September 25, 1828, to assassinate Simón Bolívar. Emissaries of Bolivar's opponents had stormed the Palace of San Carlos with the aim of killing the liberator who was at that time President. Bolívar escaped through a window, thanks to Manuelita Saenz, who protected Bolívar. After a trial, Santander who had been acting President of Gran Colombia between 1819-1826 and President of New Granada between 1832-1837, was accused of treason, and found guilty of the attack.
A copy of the sentence condemning Santander to death is included and also the message through which the Minister of War, José María Córdova, communicated Bolívar's decision to commute Santander's punishment to exile. There are also several representations or supplications sent by Santander to Bolívar during the trial.
#WorldCat: 3 copies (Indiana, Am.Phil.Society, TX).
