About This Item

Darmstadt: Ernst Ludwig Presse, 1924. Antes, Adam. Octavo. 11pp. One of 250 copies. Three woodcuts by Adam Antes emphasize three of the most famous parts of the story of Jonah: his push into the sea by fishermen, his detention in and expulsion from the belly of an enormous fish, and his reckoning with God outside the walls of Nineveh. Antes is mainly remembered as a sculptor—and indeed his woodcuts here bear an impressive dimensionality—but also completed a small number of illustrations for the Ernst Ludwig-Presse. Bound in full vellum with gilt tooling to covers, edges, and spine, as well as gilt spine titling. Scant soiling to boards, single inconsequential bump to top edge of upper cover, else fine. T.e.g.
