Semira Phillips was the first school teacher in Mahaska, Iowa, and as such shares many intimate stories of the people and activities in the small town over nearly 6 decades of the nineteenth century. Politics, national road building, the Civil War, apple butter boiling, her first glimpse of Iowa, organizing churches and schools; it's all here to learn.
