London: T. Osborne, 1749. 2nd Edition . Very Good. 5.5 x 8.25 inches (14 x 21.5 cm). Full mottled calf leather binding. Spine with five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, morocco title and volume labels. Slight loss to head of spine. Slight cracking to joints, securely bound. Wear to corners of boards. Lacking the front free endpaper, slight loss to edge of rear free endpaper. Title page printed in red and black. Very clean text throughout. Complete with the fold-out frontis portrait of Virgil, two maps (including one fold-out), fold-out engraving of Pan (with short tear and archival tape repair to reverse) and one further botanical plate with old paper reinforcement to reverse. Contemporary inscription to verso of title page: 'Ann Dykes, her book'. Spine is labelled as Volume I, however this volume is complete in itself. We have Volume II available separately (Virgil's Georgics). A respected edition of Virgil's Eclogues by English botanist John Martyn, with his numerous agricultural and botanical notes and biography of Virgil. ESTC: T139762. Overall condition is Very Good.
