With 24 Plates, with 22 plates each provided in both a hand-colored and two uncolored states. 8vo., red full-morocco leather, top edge gilt; beautifully gilt-tooled pastedowns & linen endpapers; 111 pages plus plates. First Edition. Cruikshank (1792-1818) was renowned for his social caricatures of English life for popular publications. He gained notoriety with his political prints that attacked the royal family and leading politicians. In 1820, he received a royal bribe of 100 pounds for a pledge not to caricature His Majesty George IV in any immoral situation. His work included a personification of England named "John Bull." An uncommon title about one of England's earliest puppet shows. Very Good (little rubbing covers with a scratch across the top of the front cover, small chip head of spine; contents clean & tight). $1,250.00.
