About This Item
Tokyo: Yomiuri Shimbun-sha, 1992. First Edition . Hardcover. Fine/No Jacket Issued. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Only 200 copies of this book were produced. Included with this book is an envelope with Nepalese Everest stamp cancelled in Kathmandu commemorating the expedition. The envelope is handsigned by 6 members who summited and by the leader of the Nepalese faction, Pertemba Sherpa, who had previously climbed to the summit of Everest 3 times, the most notable being the 2nd ascent (2 days after the first) of the SW Face with Chris Bonington's expedition in 1975. The summiters who signed this envelope are Lhakpa Sona Sherpa (Nepalese, ascended the NE Ridge), Padma Bahandar Tamang (Nepalese, ascended the SE Ridge), Munehiko Yamamoto (Japanese, ascended NE Ridge), Teruo Saegusa (Japanese, ascended NE Ridge), Norboru Yamada (Japanese, ascended SE Ridge, his third time atop Everest), Susumu Nakamura (Japanese, NE Ridge, leader of the television party). All of these climbers, except P.B. Tamang, reached the summit on 5 May 1988. Tamang climbed it on 10 May. Norboru Yamada descended via the SE Ridge route on this climb making him the first person to traverse the mountain from Tibet to Nepal (together with Cirenduoji and Ang Lhakpa). The other climbers who signed this cover descended along their routes of ascent. oblong 4to, 225mm tall x 289mm, 164pp, 217 photos (177 in color), all text in english (47 pages), appendices. The text in this book is entirely in English (apart from photo captions which are in English and Japanese). FINE condition with fine color photocopy of Dust Jacket. Purchased directly from the publisher, this did not come with a dust jacket. The publisher did not make enough dust jackets to cover all copies. This is the official account of the 1988 China-Japan-Nepal Friendship Expedition. The expedition completed the first "criss-cross" traverse of the mountain putting climbers on the summit from the N Col NE Ridge and South Col SE Ridge on same day, making complete double traverses of the mountain. Climbers from each country summited. There is an interesting photo of climbers on the summit viewed from directly above where a Chinese aircraft flew for the shot. This expedition claimed they made the first live television broadcast from the summit, but I recall that David Breashears did the same in 1983. Fine color photography with english & japanese captions, thorough text of the expedition. BIG BOOK: EXTRA POSTAGE required for international shipping. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.
