New York: Bell Telephone Laboratories, 1939. First Separate Edition. Stapled Wraps. Good. First Separate Edition. 79 pages, 35 figs. 8vo. Original blue printed paper wrappers, 3 hole punched at spine as issued. Bell Telephone System Technical Publications, Mathematical Physics, Monograph B-1184. Originally printed in The Bell System Technical Journal, Vol. XVIII, October 1939, pp. 645-723, this is the first separate edition. First printing state with high gloss paper for illustration on page 3 (later issues were non-glossy matching the rest of the paper in the issue). Minor soiling to wrappers and browning to the edges. Previous owners name (W. A. Andrews) inked on cover (and occasional pencilled notes internally). Stapled Wraps. The first in a proposed series of three papers dealing with the quantum physics of solids. "Quantum mechanical concepts for isolated atoms are applied to inter-acting atoms leading to methods of calculating energies and forces binding atoms together in crystals." Shockley won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1956 with Bardeen and Brattain "for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect.
