London: James Nisbet & Co, 1861. Francis Quarles (1592 - 1644) Francis Quarles was a seventeenth century poet who was a cupbearer to the future Queen Elizabeth and subsequently secretary to James Usher he was most famous for this emblem book originally published in 1635. It is a series of paraphrases from the Bible expressed in ornate and metaphorical language, each concluding with an epigram of four lines. CONDITION Beautifully embossed, densely decorated Victorian Bindings with bevilled edges, Green cloth with blind embossed decoration to rear, decoration to spine and front is a mixture of bright gilt, textured gilt and blind embossed work.gilt to all edges, double page illustrated half title, arranged in 5 sections with 15 emblems in each, 321 pages with 76 beautifully engraved illus, nice decorative head and tail piece illustration to each emblem. Cloth is a little rubbed mainly at spine heel and tips, gift inscription dated 1866 inside front, fold to top cnr of front prelims, scattered foxing through out, a little loose. OVERWEIGHT. First Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good/N/A. Illus. by Charles Henry Bennett & W Harry Rogers. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
