Written by the subjects grandson, this is the life of Don Juan Josef Clar, a Spanish immigrant who gained US citizenship and joined the U.S. Navy in 1832. His adventures in the navy were as a mathematician to teach sailors mathematics and astronomy, but he also was there for many of the naval operations of the US in the middle 1800s. After 14 years of naval duty he came to California and became embroiled in land acquisition for American California regarding the old Spanish Land Grants. A clean very presentable copy.
