John Murray, London, 1823, volume XXIX comprising numbers LVII, April 1823, and LVIII, July 1823; 8vo, pp [iv], 598; half contemporary calf, marbled sides, spine panelled gilt; some light rubbing in places, occasional slight foxing or other marking; at some point pages 8 and 9 have adhered but been carelessly opened resulting in tearing of the earlier leaf and with some consequent loss of text; otherwise overall in very good, firm and clean condition; simple episcopal bookplate with the initials T. L. C. on the front pastedown. ... ... ... The periodicals offers essays and comment on politics and literature and reviews recently published books. The opening article concerns travel in the United States, 1819 and 1820, specifically from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains, from Detroit northwest through the lakes to the sources of the Mississippi River by Heny Schoolcraft, and in Arkansas with "occasional Observations on the Manners of the Aborigines"; a 28pp essay/review on William Buckland's "Reliquiae Diluvianae"; a review of the book "Memorable Days in America, a Journal of a Tour to the United States ... to ascertain ... probable Prospects of British Emigrants"; a 36pp essay on a collection of tracts on witchcraft and second sight and on a second work, "The History of Friar Bacon ... with the Lives and Deaths of the two Conjurers, Bungay and Vandermast". There's an essay drawing on six works on slavery and its proposed abolition one of them William Wilberforce's "Appeal" and another which considers the argument advanced against ending the practice. Number LVII ends with a list of new publications and there's also an index to the volume. The pagination suggests that this is correct and that no list of new publication was issued for the second number.
