About This Item
356 pp.; c.100 colour plates on African art, c.50 plates from modern artists. Maps, biblio.. Text: French. Exh. cat. Galerie Beaubourg, Paris, 1996. Pbk. African tribal art and the art of the 20th century are intensively connected. In 1938 Robert Goldwater examined this relationship for the first time, his work was continued by Jean Laude 30 years later. However, both concentrated merely on paintings at the beginning of the 20th century. This catalogue has the aspiring motive to examine the new insights in the relationship between African art and the painting and sculpture in the second half of the 20th century. The author compares sculptures of the Gabon, the Yoruba, the Nok and other peoples with works by contemporary artists such as Daniel Spoerri, A.R. Penck, Georg Baselitz, Jean-Michel Basquiat or Arman. Each mentioned work is introduced with a colour illustration and a short text.
