New York: Harper and Row, 1963. First American Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Blue paper over boards with quarter bound black cloth spine, title stamped in silver onto spine, publishers device stamped in silver at foot of upper board, 8vo (8-1/4 inches tall), pp. 211, stated "FIRST EDITION" on copyright page. Heel of spine softened, trace of foxing to top edge of text block. DJ front flap with a pencil erasure under price, two short closed tears at top of rear panel. Yellow wrap-around band lightly toned at flap edges and spine. A late issue Harper Sealed Mystery, with the tissue seal still unbroken. The third in the Van der Valk series and originally published in England by Gollancz under the title Guns Before Butter in 1963, before being published by Harper in 1964. The New York Times named Question of Loyalty as one of the best 14 thrillers of 1964 and was selected by the Crime Club (England) as a second place prize winner. Freeling also wrote one novel (Valparaiso) in 1964 under the pseudonym 'F.R.E. Nicolas'. Ref. Hubin, P. 305, Berch, addendum.
