About This Item

Lennard, 1989. Presumed first edition/first printing. Hardcover. Good in good dust jacket. DJ has some wear, soiling, and samp staining. Cover has bled onto the inside of the DJ but does not appear to have been significantly affected. Portion of newspaper pasted to fep.. 196p., [8]p. of plates: ill., ports.; 24 cm.. Foreword by G. F. WIlkins. The author died shortly before this work was published. The author, who joined the East Surrey Regiment in 1938, recalls his remarkable escapes from the Japanese: first from Singapore to Sumatra and then by sailing boat to Moulmein where he was captured in February 1942. He spent the next three years as a prisoner of war in Moulmein and Rangoon jails, and escaped again on 28 April 1945 and found his way with Karen help to the advancing British lines. Gavin writes vividly of his comrades--of his eleven fellow escapees, seven lived to see the end of the war--and of the hardships of the prisoner of war camps.
