Birmingham: Joannis Baskerville, 1762. THE FIRST JOHN BASKERVILLE EDITION OF THIS WORK DATED 1762. (vi) + 300pp with engraved frontis, vignette on title page and dedication leaf. Sporadic, generally light, spotting/browning - more so on the frontis and title page. A small amount of the inner edge of the frontispiece has "transfered" onto the title page. Bound in contemporary full calf which has been rebacked with raised bands and gilt label. Leather a bit rubbed/worn round the edges. Overall very good of a scarce title by the master printer of 18th century England.. First Thus. Full-Leather. Very Good. 12mo.

Engraved frontispiece of Virgil and pupils, Britannia copperplate vignette to title page and Bute armorial to Dedication. Book Condition: Very Good. Later full white vellum with black leather title label & gilt titles to spine. Marbled endpapers; all edges stained red. Upper board a little bowed; vellum slightly darkened with small nick at upper front joint, but sound & tight. Bookplate of Charles Smyth to front pastedown; gift inscription to J J Coulton to second fep dated 1903 and Coulton's signature with that of William Cooper to following leaf. Foxing & light toning throughout. First Baskerville edition, by the eponymous type designer and printer to Cambridge University (1706-75). Scarce. Gaskell, pp 40-42.
