This is number # 196 of 250 - one of the 180 "Exemplaires contenant les eaux-fortes avec la lettre". There is no sign of a letter with this copy - but no other copies online seem to have letters. First edition Thus. Softback. Olive green integral paper covers. The binding is split and rubbed to the spine with some repair. One of the flaps is detached but present. A little nicking and edge wear to the wrapper. End papers are darkened, but the rest of the book is in very nice condition. One gather is loose, but holding by a thread! Embellished with gold illustrations to the head of each page. 19 full watercolour plates and 37 gold woodcuts plus 12 cul-de-lamps. 206, [1] leaf of advert. 300 x 220 mm (11¾ x 8¾ inches). France: n/a, 1900. Wonderful French architectural manuscript portfolio on 'Perspective'. This appears to be a student's own manuscript and sketches from an architectural or art course. All of the contents are dealing with perspective in different forms. Some are purely mathematical (such as the design and sketches of cones and other shapes.) Others are examples of sketches drawn in proper perspective. The portfolio contains a large number of loose leaves. Each aspect (text in French) has one or more illustrations following. Many (but not all) of the pages have pencilled numbers to the top edge. In total there are 48 pages of text and 64 pages of illustrations / diagrams. In fact, there are a few more, but we have only counted "significant" pages. The paper is a little darkened, and there are a few very minor closed tears to the page edge. The end papers have stains where tape has been used (it seems to hold a previous cover). Otherwise the book is in very good clean condition. #458 / 1000 copies. Printed on Arnold's mould made paper. The text is by Farrow, but beauty of the book lies in the beautiful red and black illustrations by Harry B. Nielson (1861-1941). Red spine, and illustrated front board. The text and illustrations are clean and bright, but the binding has split to the title page. Although still holding, the binding is a little shaken throughout as a result and the text block is threatening to break free. Contents comprise: The atlas Géographique, complete with the 16 double page hand coloured maps (as called for). These are all in good, clean and bright condition. There are a few ink annotations to the blank reverse of the maps - but the maps themselves are lovely. These are all of the ancient world, and state that they were produced by Libraire Hachette in 1833 or 1834. The nineteen etchings by Guignebault are in three states, the final one in each set being coloured. With woodcut head- and tail-pieces and chapter headings, a suite of which is bound in at the end. 395x205mm. pp. [4 bl], [4], 206, [2], [37 leaves of woodcuts]. Stunning binding by René Kieffer (signed to foot of upper turn-in). Green morocco decorated in gilt, blind, with brown and red morocco inlays forming leaves and berries. Spine with five raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt. Pictorial silk doublures, patterned silk front and rear free endpapers and two marbled preliminary and rear blank pages. Original wrappers bound in. Some very slight rubbing to spine. With marble paper covered and morocco-edged slipcase. Internally very good, this is an excellent copy in a lavish binding.
