New York: Aperture, 2008. !st edition. Hardcover. New/no jacket as issued. NEW, in publisher's shrink-wrap. Ships from Hawaii with free Priority upgrade within the US. The year 2008 has witnessed a major shift in the way people across the world live: For the first time in human history more people live in cities than in rural areas. This triumph of the urban, however, does not entirely represent progress, as the number of people living in urban slums--often under abject conditions--will soon exceed one billion. From 2005 to 2007 Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen documented life in the slums of four different cities: Nairobi, Kenya; Mumbai, India; Caracas, Venezuela; and Jakarta, Indonesia. Hatje Cantz, 2001. First Edition. Folio. Black boards lettered in yellow. Illustrated with 94 color photographs and 114 duotones. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.Inscribed by the author in 2006. His second book after the critically acclaimed "Invisible City"Schles approaches the omnipresence of social structures, which - pushed by the flood of media images - are undergoing permanent, almost frantic change. He sends his viewers onto city streets and playgrounds, into pubs and bars, puts them into a police helicopter and takes them to death row, hospital rooms and police interventions. There is no story, only a breathless sequence of pictures condensed into thematic clusters

Description:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
