About This Item
Joliet, IL: The P. F. Volland Company, 1924. Hardcover. Octavo [23 cm] 1/4 black cloth with illustrated paper covered boards. Illustrated endsheets. Fair only. The covers are gently rubbed. The underlying boards are exposed along the edges. There is a small split in the cloth at the head of the spine, and there is a half inch split in the cloth at the foot of the spine. The front hinge is weak. The verso of the front free endsheet has a former owner's name and address. There is a previous owner's name on the rear free endsheet. The rear free endsheet also has a small loss from the top edge and a 1 and 1/2 inch long closed tear in the top edge. There is a small abraded patch on the title page, and the edges of the pages are sporadically abraded. Several pages have large losses from the bottom edges. These losses do obscure a small amount of the text. Some pages also have small losses from the edges, and a couple of pages have closed tears that have been covered with tape. The text block is cracked multiple times. Johnny Gruelle is best known for creating Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy, the fanciful dolls and storybook characters that led him to national prominence in only a few years' time.
