About This Item

London: Mills and Boon, 1910. half-morocco binding gilt-decorated on spine in the prize-binding style, some wear at hinges and edges, but a sound clean copy. The premise of the book is that the author was engaged by James C. Fairfield, of Chicago, to act as tour guide throughout Britain, in the early 1900s. Fairfield is apparently an enthusiastic cultural tourist, fascinated by places associated with Shakespeare and Dickens, for example. Tearle was a pseudoym for Edward Tyrrell Jacques, and the accounts of the rambles are described by one source as part-fictionalised. The narrative style is certainly lively and amusing, poking some fun at his 'employer'. Included is a 4-leaf excerpt from Chambers' Miscellany of roughly the same date, about a further ramble to a Dickens-associated site. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
