Plantin Press for Limited Editions Club, 1959. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Fine. Introduction by J. Frank Dobie. Slipcase has some minor stains, book very fine, signed by Everett Gee Jackson, illustrator. First edition thus. Limited to 1,500 copies. Zamorano Eighty 46: "Ramona, a maudlin, sentimental story is, of course not a great novel. But it is an exceedingly important California book for two reasons. A popular book, it spread the fame of California and no doubt inspired a considerable number of people to migrate here in the nineties and in the first two decades of this century. And, second, by exposing the abuses to which Southern California Indians were subjected, it resulted in numerous wholesome reforms in the administration of Indian affairs. The book continues to sell several thousand copies a year." BAL 10456. Baird-Greenwood 1296. Cowan p. 307n. Johnson, High Spots of American Literature pp. 46-47. Powell, California Classics.

Nice edition of this classic California novel that helped to spread the fame of the state, and no doubt helped to fuel migration to the area in the late 1800s and the first few decades of the 20th century. This work also helped to publicize the injustices and ill-treatment of the indigenous peoples of California, which in turn led to reforms in the administration of Native American affairs. Description:
Two volumes, bound in brown leather and marbled boards, both books very good, a beautiful set. Monterey edition. Deluxe edition seldom seen with 5 raised bands and different from the red morocco binding. Introduction by Susan Coolidge and illustrations by Henry Sandham. Powell, California Classics p. 277: Among the many editions of Ramona, two are outstanding. The Monterey edition of 1900 contains an introduction by Susan Coolidge which is one of the best things written about Mrs. Jackson. It is illustrated by Henry Sandham, the Canadian artist who had travelled with Mrs. Jackson in the early 1880 s and made field drawings to illustrate her Century articles. Sandham is the ideal portrayer of Southern California of that time. Zamorano Eighty 46: Ramona, a maudlin, sentimental story is, of course not a great novel. But it is an exceedingly important California book for two reasons. A popular book, it spread the fame of California and no doubt inspired a considerable number of people to migrate here… Read More

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1884. First edition. Near Fine. Original green publisher's cloth binding stamped in gilt on the spine and black and gilt on the front board. Floral endpapers. A Near Fine copy with a bit of faint spotting to the boards and lower corners gently bumped. Contemporary gift inscriptions to the front endpaper and occasional marginal foxing, else internally unmarked. Complete with four pages of publisher's ads in the rear. In all, a square, pleasing copy of an important work usually found in worn condition. Following a series of devastating personal losses, Helen Hunt Jackson turned to writing both fiction and non-fiction as a means of supporting herself. Throughout her career, her works had a decidedly progressive bent. "By the 1880s, when Jackson first visited Southern California, she was an unabashed activist as well as a belletrist. Ramona offers an almost unmitigated denunciation of U.S. imperialism in California, presenting the region in a dystopian light, as a paradise… Read More
