Hirohito signed this document at a formative period in Japanese history. Within seven months, Japan would invade China, beginning the Second Sino-Japanese War. The war, which saw the Japanese occupation of Shanghai and the capital at Nanking, resulted in the deaths of tens of millions of soldiers and civilians. The war would continue for several years, until, with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the conflict became subsumed in the Second World War."
