About This Item

Cairo / Egypt: Sanduk Al-Posta 33, 1901. Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original wrappers with a head title in qufic script. Slight chippings on the extremities of the cover. Overall a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic script). 224 p. Extremely rare all published first and only issue of this Ottoman periodical published in Cairo by Kemal, one of the most colorful and controversial figures in Ottoman/Turkish history, while he was living in Egypt after receiving his Political Sciences diploma in 1899, until the overthrow of Sultan Abdulhamid II. The set includes only the first issue, and although it is planned to be published quarterly, the second issue has never been published. This rare periodical contains articles written by the author himself titled "Oriental issue in the eighteenth century", "philosophy of history", "our poet, poets", "to a Bedouin's daughter", "Ottoman sultans we can't understand", "a short history: Excitement in Russia", "Travel memories: Cami'ul Zeytune"; as well as Ali Suavi (1839-1878)'s article "A rare copy: To Ali Pasha". Ali Kemal Bey (1867-1922), was a British-Turkish journalist, newspaper editor, poet, liberal-leaning politician, and government official who was for some three months Minister of the Interior in the government of Damat Ferid Pasha, the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire. He was murdered by paramilitary officers during the Turkish War of Independence. Kemal is the father of Zeki Kuneralp, who was the former Turkish ambassador in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Spain. He is the paternal grandfather of both the Turkish diplomat Selim Kuneralp, and the British politician Stanley Johnson. Ali Kemal is the great-grandfather of former British prime minister Boris Johnson and his siblings. On November 6, 1922, he was attacked and lynched by a group of paramilitary officers with sticks, stones, and knives, and hanged from a tree. During the First World War, the Ottoman Empire was one of the Central Powers allied with the German Empire, and Kemal's son and daughter living in England adopted their maternal grandmother's maiden name, Johnson. His son Osman also began to use his middle name Wilfred as his first name. (Osman) Wilfred Johnson later married Irene Williams (the daughter of Stanley F. Williams of Bromley, Kent, by his marriage to Marie Luise, Freiin von Pfeffel, born in 1882) and their son Stanley Johnson became an expert on the environment and population studies and a Conservative member of the European Parliament. His son Boris Johnson, Kemal's great-grandson, became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 24 July 2019. (Wikipedia).
