Reprinted here for the first time are 42 inaccessible 17th century prologues and epilogues with biographical and bibliographical notes, proof of authorship, interpretive backgrounds, and variant readings. Many were first presented on the Restoration stage by actors who stepped outside the play to speak directly to the audience. Because they were usually published as folio half sheets, separately from the plays, few have survived in significant numbers. An important contribution to the history of drama, poetry, oratory, printing, and 17th century taste. Bound in the original brown cloth, stamped in bright gold. Complete with dust jacket..
