Herculano expresses his objections to the recently signed Concordat.By 1850 Herculano (1810-1877) was well respected as a historian. He has long been recognized as the greatest Portuguese historian of the nineteenth century, and one of the greatest that country ever produced. A complete volume of Innocêncio is devoted to a bibliography and analysis of his works, which include Historia da origem e estabelecimento da Inquisição em Portugal, Lisbon 1854-59, and Historia de Portugal, Lisbon 1846-53.
