Regarding the upcoming election of 1856, Rev. Steele describes a meeting he had with John C Fremont, the first presidential candidate of the newly formed Republican Party. Colonel Fremont affirms his religion as Protestant & describes the suggestion that he might actually be a Catholic "is a device of the enemy, gotten up without any foundation or truth, merely for political effect."
