Illustrated endpapers. A historical novel, illustrated by Harve Stein, by author and editor Carl Carmer (1893 - 1976) whose writings concentrate on American regional history, folkways, and legends. This narrative is based on the true story of an admirable young woman of Quaker faith. Set in the days when wealth manor lords controlled much land, Mehitable Wing Prendergast who, but 28 years old, eloquently and successfully defends her husband William Prendergast in courst for participation in the 1766 "rent rebellions" along the Hudson River. Their son James Prendergast is the founder of Jamestown. Strong copy.
