About This Item

London : Peter Davies, 1926. Cloth. Good. 13.5" by 8.5". Vera Willoughby. An illustrated limited edition of this play by George Farquhar. George Farquhar was an Irish dramatist noted for his contributions of late Restoration comedy. The Recruiting Officer is one of this most famous plays, and follows the social and sexual exploits of two offices in Shrewsbury. With 12 coloured plates by Vera Willoughby. Willoughby was courted by Peter Llewellyn Davies, the publisher of this volume and inspiration for Peter Pan. The courtship of Willoughby caused a rift between Davies and Barrie, as Willoughby was married at the time. She was a noted illustrator and poster designer of her day. In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, rubbed with some loss to paper. Handling marks and light dampstaining. Some bumping to extremities and lifting to backstrip. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean Good
