About This Item

St. Louis: Press of Perrin & Smith, 1909. Very Good. St. Louis: Press of Perrin & Smith, 1909. First Edition. Octavo (7" x 5.25"); 155p. Red cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering. Covers bumped at corners and spine ends, with some scuffing down joints and a small dampstain to back. Opens easily to between gatherings, but binding is holding soundly. Pages unmarked. Library of Congress stamps dated in the publication year on copyright, dedication page, and on slip attached to back free endpaper indicating the book was received and purged as a duplicate. Somewhat uncommon, with fewer than ten copies in institutions and none found in the trade or auction record at time of listing.

Waddell asserts in his preface that of all the races that have been "oppressed by the white race, this is the only case where a race was destroyed," and says of the book to come "*This* is not a Government report." What follows is a sympathetic (though still occasionally and expectedly problematic) account of the history, nature, and future of the "Red-Man" and his place in America. The latter half of the book is comprised of unrelated aphorisms and essays.
