The Red River Expedition or the Wolseley expedition was a military force authorized by Canadian Prime Minister John A. Macdonald to confront Louis Riel and his Provisional Government along with Métis fighters in 1870. The expedition was also intended to counter American expansionist sentiments in northern border states. After a grueling three-month cross-country march, Riel and his men were quickly subdued at Fort Garry.
