Among those awarded the Charles Frankel Prize were: Daniel Boorstin, Ken Burns; Shelby Foote, Eudora Welty; John Hope Franklin; Charles Kurault, David McCullough, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Bill Moyers. Winners of the National Humanities Medal included: Paul Mellon, Studs Terkel, Stephen Ambrose, E. L. Doctorow, Gary Wills, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Garrison Keillor, Jim Lehrer, and Steven Spielberg.
