About This Item
Potts Point, NSW: Hordern House., 2001. Limited edition, one of 300 copies printed. Thick quarto. Publisher's original light-green cloth with printed paper title label to the upper board and titles blocked in dark green to the spine. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, twenty maps and illustrations, and eight colour plates. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a very minor mark to the spine and a couple of faint marks to the top edge of the lower board. The contents remain clean and crisp throughout. The only edition in English of Freycinet's comprehensive examination of early New South Wales, one of the most important historical texts to deal with Australian settlement, and especially with the city of Sydney. The original text appeared as chapters 29 to 40 of the 'Historique' section of Freycinet's 'Voyage autour du Monde' (1824-1844), and is here translated from the French by Thomas Cullity, with an additional introduction and notes.
