About This Item
Philadelphia: T.B. Peterson & Brothers, 1872 Original Cloth. First Thus. Embossed cover indicates that this volume is part of "Peterson's Uniform Edition of The Complete Works of Mrs. Ann S. Stevens." Stephens (1810-1886) was born in Connecticut, but began her literary career in Portland, Maine with her husband Edward (they co-founded and edited a monthly literary periodical), and eventually became one of the best-known writers on the New York City scene after moving there in 1837. She made a comfortable living writing serial and "dime" novels, and compiled "A Pictorial History of the War for the Union" during the Civil War. Cover extremities moderately-to-heavily worn; cover cloth irregularly rubbed, faded, and discolored; moderate vertical crease to centerpoint of rear cover. Spine somewhat cocked, but binding intact. Prior owner name, date on front endpaper. Light-to-moderate irregular foxing throughout text; light dampstain to most of text pages, originating at upper margin of page 78 and gradually enlarging throughout rest of text, affecting upper half of pages. A flawed but serviceable copy of this scarce volume.
