About This Item

London: E. Grant Richards, 1906. Hardback. Good. No DW. Lilav cloth boards with gilt decoration to front board. The spine strip is faded. Text is tight and clean with some margin notes.Inside front cover is a most attractive ex-libris wood engraving of a rural ploughing scene. No inscriptions or annotations. Some bumping to book ends and smal nick at top of spine. Otherwise this is a copy in good condition considering its age. A Doctor's Religion. Published in 1906.. An English text translation of Browne's classic in which he uses scientific imagery to illustrate religious truths and discusses the relationship between science and religion. Frontispiece portrait of the author, with tissue guard. Sir Thomas Browne. (19 October 1605 – 19 October 1682) was an English polymath and author of varied works which reveal his wide learning in diverse fields including science and medicine, religion and the esoteric. His writings display a deep curiosity towards the natural world, influenced by the scientific revolution of Baconian enquiry. Browne's literary works are permeated by references to Classical and Biblical sources as well as the idiosyncrasies of his own personality. Although often described as suffused with melancholia, his writings are also characterised by wit and subtle humour, while his literary style is varied, according to genre, resulting in a rich, unique prose which ranges from rough notebook observations to polished Baroque eloquence.
